Vogue vs. Porter

Posted on

I've read my fair share of magazines, and I can definitely say that I've gone through phases.  As a pre-teen I started out with a subscription to Instyle, then I was really into Elle magazine.  I went through a phase with Vogue last year, but I fell in love for good when I got my hands on Porter magazine for the first time...

There's something about Porter that really appeals to my taste, even though I would have thought myself as a Vogue girl all the way.  That's not to say that I don't love Vogue; I've seen Anna Wintour speak, read many of their issues, and I even have a Vogue phone case. That said, here's why I'm subscribed to Porter:

Vogue has an amazing history that I'm very fond of, and their editors are top-notch-- Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington are basically my idols.  Their write-ups are eye-catching, and I commend the  initially controversial decision to put celebrities on the cover.  Vogue publishes every month, while Porter publishes only six times per year.

The first thing that caught my eye about Porter was the cover stars. I prefer models to celebrities, so it has been great to see the likes of Karlie Kloss, Natalia Vodianova, Gisele, and others grace the cover.  Their trend reports are flawless and Porter is great at subtly hinting towards commercialism through gorgeous editorials.  I love the minimalistic layout of Porter, where they keep colour to a minimal outside of the striking photography.

Now, which it-girl would have which magazine under her arm? I would imagine Olivia Palermo reading Porter, with Cara Delevingne clutching to Vogue on the way to her latest casting.

  1. This is such a unique article, I love it! I've never read a blog post where someone compared magazine styles before. This is great because it gives someone an idea of what to expect from the magazines, without having to commit. That said, I've never read Porter and I'm currently subscribed to Vogue. I'll definitely have to look into Porter, as it seems like a very unique spin on fashion.

Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day and weekend :)

  2. What a great write up, Emma ,and I agree with Jalisa, I've not come across a post like this before. I'm not a huge magazine reader, and have only several issues of Vogue before, but I'm all about the writing. I have to say that minimalism has a really soft spot in my heart, too. I've yet to check our Porter; gotta do that soon!

  7. I had never purchased an issue of Porter but I will now! Thank you for bringing this wonderful fashion magazine to my attention! The check boxes showing the different strengths of the two magazines are very enlightening.

  9. I love Vogue but I have to say Porter is very interesting (trends, articles...). I love the layout of Porter and aesthetic.
I'm annoyed with the amount of Ads in Vogue, that's why I don't buy it very often.
